VOLUNTEER DOG EXERCISERS
Volunteer Dog Exercisers Needed
Volunteer Dog Exercisers Needed – read our Requirements below:
TIME - Must be able to Volunteer a minimum of two hours/week on a scheduled WEEKDAY (Mon-Fri) between the hours of 10-4. Consistency in knowing the dogs and coordinating with our other Volunteer Exercise Crew is important and why we need this position to be one you can commit to on a weekly recurrent and same-day basis. Saturdays are not available as our play yard is tied up with people visiting dogs and/or our Volunteer Photographers working hard so our pets can be seen on-line. We are closed on Sundays and major holidays.
AGE - 18 years old as a minimum due to safety, liability and legal requirements. Now if you have a partner so there are two of you, that is perfect as it can really make it a lot easier on both of you. And we are sorry but you cannot bring your children with you as not all of our dogs are good with children (some may simply be too exuberant/physical and could harm a child by jumping or running into them) and we certain would never want a child to get scraped up or hurt here because the parent is distracted dealing with a dog.
PHYSICAL – You must be physically capable of getting one or two large, often uncooperative dogs out of and back into their kennels, walking them to and from our play yard area, while keeping them under control. Face it – many dogs surrendered to Shelters have never had any leash training, they have been cooped up in their kennel, and are excited to get to the play yard. So they can be quite a handful at times getting them in and out of their kennels and then rounded up at the end of play time. And warning – you WILL bang your head on a kennel gate at some point until you learn your own technique for getting into and out of the kennels – we ALL have.
NOT AFRAID OF DIRT & YUCK – Warning, that you will get FILTHY DIRTY, hot and sweaty, exercising dogs as they run through the grass, dog poo, pool water and then come jump on YOU. Doing pooper scooper duty while exercising dogs is necessary to keep the yard cleaned up at all times. In the summer it is also HOT and in the winter it just might be COLD, so being able to help our dogs by letting them romp no matter the weather (ok – not in rain and storms or if freezing or simply so hot even the dogs say – ‘eh), is just part of it. Bringing a change of clothes with you is highly recommended, especially if you think you are going to make a stop anywhere after you leave the Shelter.
MUST LOVE DOGS! Exercising dogs sounds like loads of fun until you are an hour into it in the heat (or cold), you are funky as all get out, and it is just one of those days when the dogs are not cooperating. Exercising dogs IS fun, but in all honesty it is WORK!
If you are interested please email us at hselco@bellsouth.net and we will get you hooked up with one of our experienced Dog Exercisers who can show you all the ropes and get you on board. We love our Volunteers who help like this as it is truly a labor of love!
NOTE – IF YOU ARE CONTACTING US IN REGARDS TO COURT ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE YOU MUST BRING YOUR COURT PAPERWORK AND PHOTO ID TO THE SHELTER OFFICE TO SIGN UP DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS! DO NOT FILL OUT OUR VOLUNTEER FORMS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE. ALL COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK WILL BE DONE AT OUR TAIL’S END THRIFT STORE.
